Candidates from the least developed and lower middle-income Commonwealth countries are eligible for the Commonwealth Shared Scholarships, which are full-time Master’s study opportunities financed jointly by UK universities. Undergraduate coursework, PhD research, or any pre-sessional English language instruction are not covered by the grants.

Bangladesh, Cameroon, Eswatini, The Gambia, Ghana, India, Kenya, Kiribati, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Tuvalu, Uganda, Vanuatu, and Zambia are among the nations that make up the world’s developing nations.

Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Study Specializations

Benefits of Commonwealth Shared Scholarship

Each scholarship will include the following:

  • Flight from the student’s home country’s closest international airport to London, with approval from CSC, and a flight back at the end of the award.
  • Tuition for the MSc in Nutrition for Global Health (at the abroad rate, plus the cost of the required field trip): GBP 1,516.00/monthly maintenance allowance (London metropolitan area rate).
  • If required, a clothing allowance for warmth.
  • Reimbursement of mandatory TB test prices at a pre-determined CSC amount when one is necessary for a visa application.
  • Grants to help with study-related expenses (thesis grant and study travel grant).
  • Extra baggage is permitted on flights back home, up to the CSC-specified rate.
  • Disability Support Allowance to cover daily expenses (if eligible).
  • Child allowance of GBP 529.00 per month for the first child and GBP 131.00 per month for the second and third children under the age of 16 is available to scholars who are widowed, divorced, or single parents as long as the kids live at the same address in the UK and stay with them.

*The amounts listed are at CSS rates for 2022–2023. A yearly increase may be applied to these. Rates for 2023–24 will be announced by CSC as soon as possible.

Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Eligibility:

Candidates who wish to apply for a Commonwealth Shared Scholarship must:

  • Being a citizen of, receiving refugee status from, or a British Protected Person from one of the eligible Commonwealth nations
  • Being a permanent resident of a Commonwealth nation in development
  • By the beginning of the UK academic year in September 2023, be prepared to begin your academic studies there.
  • Possess a first degree with at least an upper second class (2:1) rating by September 2023, or a lower second class degree plus an appropriate postgraduate degree (often a Master’s degree)
  • Not have completed one (academic) year or more of study or employment in a developed country.
  • Be in need of this scholarship and not be able to afford to study in the UK
  • Have delivered the necessary supplementary materials in the required format.

How to Apply for Commonwealth Shared Scholarship

Application guidelines:

You should submit an application to take a Master’s programme at a UK university that is approved by the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship program. Along with submitting an application for a Shared Scholarship, you must also gain admission to your programme. You must seek particular guidance from your preferred university regarding the best time to apply, the criteria for admission, and the application procedures.

In addition to any other applications that your desired university may want you to submit, you must submit your application through the CSC’s online application process. Every university has a different cutoff date for applications.

Selection Process

Each participating UK university will pick a certain number of applicants for Commonwealth Shared Scholarships through its own recruitment process. In March 2023, universities must submit the names of their chosen candidates to the CSC. The CSC will then attest that the candidates satisfy the requirements for this program. By July 2023, universities will let applicants know their outcomes.

  • Academic standing of the applicant
  • Quality of the study plan
  • Potential effects on the candidate’s native country’s development

Important Documentation

Applications must have supporting materials in order to be accepted.

The following documents must be included in candidates’ applications:

  • A document proving the applicant’s citizenship or refugee status in a Commonwealth nation: a copy of a current passport (or national ID card) that includes a photo, birthdate, and nation of citizenship.
  • Full transcripts outlining all higher education credentials, up-to-date transcripts for any courses still being taken, and certified translations in cases where the transcripts are not in English.
  • The application will be disqualified if any necessary supporting materials are not submitted by the deadline.
  • Outside of the online application system, supporting documents cannot be sent to the CSC.

Is the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Fully-funded?

What financial assistance is offered. Most scholarships are fully financed, which means they will pay for your tuition, travel expenses to and from the UK, and a stipend to help you live while you are there.

Can I stay in the UK after the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship?

Only if you want to switch from Master's to PhD study after receiving your degree will the CSC take into account your request to extend your leave to remain in the UK. Conditions will be quite strict. The CSC is unable to give you a letter of recommendation or authorization to stay in the UK after receiving your award so you can continue to work.

Obtaining a Commonwealth Scholarship is how challenging?

You must be a citizen of a Common Wealth nation in order to apply for a commonwealth scholarship. To qualify for a scholarship, you must complete your undergraduate degree and receive at least an upper second-class grade. You must finish your master's program before you may enroll in a PHD program.
