Australian Disability Scholarship program

Australian Disability Scholarship program is a special education aid for students with one disabilities or the other finding it hard to get educated due to financial incapacity. The Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) partners with the Australian Network on Disability to encourage leaders with disabilities to apply for a new round of governance education scholarships, funded by the Australian Government Department of Social Services.

The Disability Leadership Program intends to offer 200 full fee scholarships over the next two years while bridging the gap between disabled students and qualitative education. Australian Students who are living with a disability are advised to apply for the 2022 edition of this scholarship.

Prospects of the Scholarship:

The scholarship aims to;

  1. Deliver exceptional, accessible, and inclusive learning experiences for Australian students with disability.
  2. Build skills, boost confidence and empowerment of students with disability to be independent.
  3. Improve community perceptions and attitudes towards people with disability through raising awareness and disability confidence, thereby eliminating the stigmatization of disabled individuals.

 Eligibility of the Australian Disability Scholarship program:

Applying candidates must ensure that they;

  • Meet the entry requirements for either the AICD Foundations of Directorship program, or the AICD Company Directors Course*
  • Identify as a person with disability, mental health condition, or chronic illness including physical, intellectual, sensory, neurological, learning disability Psychological or immunological as recognized by the constitution.   • Have never been, nor are you currently, disqualified from being a director of a corporation or organization.
  • Must be able to demonstrate leadership potential within your organization or community.
  • Apply for a course in your own State of residence.
  • Must be ready to pay any travel costs associated with participation.
  • Reckon with the course time and deadline commitments.
  • Be aged minimum of 18 years old or over.
  • Must be an Australian Citizen or permanent resident.

How to Apply:

To apply for the Australian Disability Scholarship program, applicants must complete the following steps:

  1. Click “APPLY NOW” on the registration link and follow the prompts to create a profile.
  2. Complete an online Australian Scholarships Foundation scholarship application form and upload your personal information/resume.
  3. Provide a letter of endorsement from your employer or trusted referee if you apply for the AICD Company Directors Course.

Benefits of the Scholarship:

Selected Applicants are entitled to;

  • One-year membership to the AICD and a free Tuition.
  • A free subscription to the AICD’s Directorship Opportunities service.

25 scholarship winners from this round will also be invited to participate in Leader to Leader Conversations.

Courses and Locations: 

Applicants will be provided with a number of course dates between November 2022 and June 2023 from which they are to choose. Courses are available in all states and territories although not all locations will be running face-to-face courses, some may deploy online courses due to the fluid nature of the COVID-19 situation and challenges that remain for intrastate and interstate travel.

Application Evaluation:

Applications will be evaluated on the following criteria:

  • Alignment with the student’s aspirations, highlighting development benefits
  • Applicant’s potential for leadership and impact on community
  • Barriers to participation in leadership and education.
  • Financial literacy and directorship/executive experiences.

Applications will be assessed by a group of panelists from AICD, Australian Network on Disability and the Australian Scholarships Foundation.

Document Required:

  • Verification of Disability i.e Medical Report.
  • You must provide also, a Resume.
  • Passport Identification.
  • You are also required to provide an endorsement letter written by your organization or local authority if you are applying for the Company Directors Course. If you are unable to obtain an endorsement letter from your organization, you can contact the Australian Scholarships Foundation to discuss your options.
