Gosling-Lim Postdoctoral Fellowship in Southeast Asian Studies 2022 (up to $50,000)

The Gosling-Lim Postdoctoral Fellowship in Southeast Asian Studies 2022 by Association for Asian Studies (AAS)  accepts applications. This fellowship focuses on developing competency in Southeast Asian Studies among Southeast Asian citizens based in Southeast Asia and at Southeast Asian institutions. Its goal is to allow such scholars to focus on publishing their dissertation research and/or embark on new post-dissertation research without any distraction of having to teach, consult, or shoulder administrative burdens, while also providing them with the opportunity to broaden their scholarly networks and expertise. The goal is for fellowship recipients to enhance their careers in Southeast Asia while also helping to advance the discipline of Southeast Asian Studies in the region.

Eligibility of Gosling-Lim Postdoctoral Fellowship

  • Southeast Asian nationals with a single nationality who hold a Ph.D. degree or equivalent and are or will be involved in the academic profession in
  • Southeast Asia and whose research is focused on Southeast Asia. The degree must have been earned between one and three years before the start of the award. Independent scholars who plan to work for a university in the future are encouraged to apply.
  • Applicants with dual nationalities may apply on the condition that they will remain in Southeast Asia for at least 2 years after the fellowship ends to actively contribute and shape the field of Southeast Asian Studies without leaving the country for work abroad.
  • By the time of application, applicants must be holding a Ph.D.
  • Doctoral students are not eligible to apply.
  • Membership in the AAS is not required.
  • Applicants must not have previously obtained a Southeast Asia-focused research and writing fellowship of this type.
  • A past Gosling-Lim Postdoctoral Fellow is not eligible to apply again.

Eligible Countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam

Benefits of Gosling-Lim Postdoctoral Fellowship

Funding:

  • The fellowship provides US$50,000 in funding for postdoctoral research and writing to be spent over an 8-12 month period while the recipient is in residence or otherwise based at an academic institution in Southeast Asia or other than their home institution and the institution where they received their doctorate.

Funding can be used for:

  • Costs associated with publishing research findings (for individuals 1-2 years post-Ph.D.) or conducting new research (for those two to three years from Ph.D. who have already published their dissertation research).
  • Expenses for related travel and lodging, including attendance at one or two professional conferences to present the research being conducted.
  • A reasonable stipend (salary)

Funding can’t be used for:

  • The funding cannot be combined with another fellowship.
  • Even though the fellow may be situated at a university outside of Southeast Asia, the Gosling-Lim Postdoctoral Fellowship requires the fellow to return to Southeast Asia to actively contribute to the development of the discipline of Southeast Asian studies.
  • The fellow may not leave the Southeast Asian region within two years of receiving the award. To mitigate the negative impact of the “brain drain,” anyone who does so may be required to refund the entire sum of the prize.

  • A statement from the applicant explaining why the proposed host institution was chosen.

  • 1 letter of support from the applicant’s home institution
