United Nations Environment Programme 2023

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the forefront global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the relevant implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

UNEP’s Ecosystems Division works with international and national partners, providing technical assistance and advisory services for the implementation of environmental policy, and strengthening the environmental management capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition.

The United Nations Environment Programme is located in the Ecosystems Division at the Bangkok duty station.

Under the direct supervision of of the Global Team Leader UN-REDD (United Nations Collaborative Programme on Reducing emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation), the fellows will perform the following;

Responsibilities:

  • Performs consulting assignments, in collaboration with the client, by planning facilitating workshops, through other interactive sessions and assisting in developing the action plan the client will use to manage the change.
  • Researches, analyzes and presents information gathered from diverse sources.
  • Organizes and prepares written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analysis, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications.
  • Provides substantive backstopping to consultative and other meetings, conferences and to include proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, preparation of documents and presentations.
  • Initiates and coordinates outreach activities; conducts training workshops, seminars and makes presentations on assigned topics/activities.
  • Leads and/or participates in large, complex field missions, including provision of guidance to external consultants, government officials and other parties and drafting mission summaries.
  • Coordinates activities related to budget funding (programme/project preparation and submissions, progress reports, financial statements) and prepares related documents/reports (pledging, work programme, programme budget).
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Eligibilities of The United Nations Environment Programme:

To be eligible for the United Nations Environment Programme, you must possess the following;

  • PROFESSIONALISM: Technical knowledge and understanding of theories, concepts and approaches relevant to REDD+ and related policies and measures to reduce deforestation and forest degradation.
  1. Applicants of the United Nations Environment Programme must have the ability to identify issues, analyze and participate in the resolution of issues/problems.
  2. Ability to conduct data collection using various methods. Conceptual analytical and evaluative skills to conduct independent research and analysis, including familiarity with and experience in the use of various research sources, including electronic sources on the internet, intranet and other databases.
  3. Ability to apply judgment in the context of assignments given, plan own work and manage conflicting priorities.
  4. To be eligible for United Nations Environment Programme, candidate must shows pride in work and in achievements; demonstrates professional competence and mastery of subject matter; is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results; is motivated by professional rather than personal concerns; shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges; remains calm in stressful situations.
  5. Takes responsibility for incorporating gender perspectives and ensuring the equal participation of women and men in all areas of work.

  1. Speaks and writes clearly and effectively; listens to others, correctly interprets messages from others and responds appropriately; asks questions to clarify, and exhibits interest in having two-way communication; tailors language, tone, style and format to match audience; demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed.
  • TEAMWORK:
  1. Works collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals; solicits input by genuinely valuing others’ ideas and expertise; is willing to learn from others; places team agenda before personal agenda; supports and acts in accordance with final group decision, even when such decisions may not entirely reflect own position; shares credit for team accomplishments and accepts joint responsibility for team shortcomings.

Criteria of The United Nations Environment Programme:

  • An advanced university degree (Master’s or Doctorate, or equivalent) in forestry, political science, economics or a related fields is required.
  • A first-level degree (Bachelor’s or equivalent) in the specified fields with two additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
  • Work Experience
  • A minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible and interdisciplinary experience in the design and management of complex multi-country programmes is required.
  • Experience in policy-making in forests conservation/restoration and their sustainable use is needed.
  • Work experience in active interact with government officials, NGOs and research institutions is required.
  • Experience in REDD+ finance and private sector investment in REDD+ is desirable.
  • Experience in social and environmental safeguards of REDD+ is desirable.
  • Work experience with International organizations in the field of forest conservation and management is desirable
  • Experience working within the Asia-Pacific region is desirable.Languages
  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the United Nations Environment Programme, fluency in oral and written English is required. Working knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.

Please Note: “Fluency equals a rating of “fluent” in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of “confident” in two of the four areas Assessment.

Selection and Assessment Process:

  • Evaluation of qualified candidates of the United Nations Environment Programme may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.Special Notice
  • Appointment against this position is for an initial period of one year and may be subject to extension.
  • Staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and to assignment by him or her. In this context, all staff are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers in accordance with established rules and procedures.
