What is a fellowship proposal?

An application for a fellowship should:

  • Describe your intended project and your reasons for doing it.
  • Make an introduction to the committee.
  • Ensure the committee that you are committed to completing this project and that you are the best candidate for the job.
  • Show off the preparation efforts you have made so far.
  • You will need to have done a lot of research and thought about how your planned experience fits into your “big picture” by the time applications are due. However, it is accepted that between the application deadline and your departure, your plans may change, so you might not have everything completely planned out when you submit your proposal.

When reading fellowship applications, selection committees look for proof that:

  • The suggested activity is practical.
  • You are qualified to complete the work you are proposing since you have the relevant training and experience.
  • Your goals for the exercise are distinct and practical.
  • You’ve done enough planning and research for your project.
  • You will apply something from the suggested activity to your time at Yale or elsewhere.
  • You have taken into account the wants and needs of every stakeholder.
  • You have the support you need to do the assignment successfully and responsibly since you have asked professionals in the field for advice.
  • The questions you should try to answer in your fellowship submission are listed below.
  • These range from inquiries into the specifics of your strategy to inquiries into how your suggested activity fits into your longer-term objectives.

A General tip

  • Begin early.
  • Consider your fellowship proposal as a component of a broader submission that also includes your CV, transcript, recommender(s) letter(s), and other supporting materials.
  • Think about your audience and write for an intelligent non-specialist by making sure the language is clear to readers who aren’t experts in your industry.
  • The voice shouldn’t be too formal or too informal. Aim for simplicity, zeal, and directness; while eloquence is appreciated, it should not come at the expense of content or integrity.
  • Make sure all information is true, and be ready to go into some detail about everything you mention.
  • Be realistic about your accomplishments without being overly modest.
  • The selection committee wants to know about you, not a fabrication, so don’t try to anticipate what they might be looking for.
  • Clarity, conviction, accuracy, and academic honesty are all requirements for effective writing. Proposals are interpreted as evidence of well-organized thought and good communication.
  • Ask for opinions. Consult your writing tutor, recommenders, and faculty advisers in particular. Inquire of your readers what queries your plan raises that you may not have thought of.
  • Revise. Consider experimenting with and testing out several variants.
  • Observe the word count restrictions and all other rules.
  • Proofread. Errors imply that your intentions are not serious.
