Whether studying the chemistry of life, or developing the advanced science behind modern technology, chemical scientists use their expertise to improve our health, our environment and our daily lives.

Collaboration is essential. The Scholarship connect scientists with each other and society as a whole, so they can do their best work and make discoveries and innovation happen.

This year the scholarship is awarding £26,000 tax-free funding to up to 150 talented individuals entering chemistry teacher training in England in the 2022/23 academic year.

How To Apply To RSC Scholarship

The number of training places available each year is limited and available places are expected to fill up well in advance of courses starting for the academic year 2022/23.

Step One – Submit your application

  • Please note that if you’re unsuccessful at any stage, you cannot reapply in the current application year.
  • Applicants will need to complete our online application
  • Personal details, including academic background and qualification, contact details for someone who has agreed to provide a reference for you
  • A personal statement that demonstrates why you think you should be awarded a Royal Society of Chemistry Teacher Training Scholarship (1000 words max). Please give specific examples, and refer back to the what we look for in candidates section. You will need to cover:
  • Why you want to be a chemistry teacher
  • What skills and experience you have that would make you an exceptional chemistry teacher
  • What experience you have with school-age people this could be through employment, voluntary work or hobbies
  • How you think the Royal Society of Chemistry scholarship will benefit you
  • A chemistry subject knowledge check with 15 multiple choice questions.
  • For applicants with an international degree, you will also need to upload documentary evidence from UK NARIC (National Recognition Information Centre) confirming the degree is comparable to a UK Bachelor’s degree. Guidance is available from the DFE’s helpline on 0800 389 2500.

Step Two – Online knowledge test and interview

  • Online applications will be shortlisted and invited to complete an in-depth online subject knowledge test. Questions are written in exam format and cover topics generally taught at GCSE and A-level in England.
  • Successful candidates will then be invited to an online interview.
