Stellenbosch University DeepMind Scholarship

Stellenbosch University DeepMind Scholarship is available to students from all over sub-Sahara African countries who wish to pursue research related to machine learning with students selected by the University to commence their courses in 2022 academic year.

On a mission to boost Artificial intelligence and machine learning expertise on the African continent, thanks to prestigious scholarships to be awarded for postgraduate studies in the fields of applied mathematics, statistics, electrical and electronic engineering and computer science at Stellenbosch University (SU).

About DeepMind:

The DeepMind Scholarship program offers talented students from groups currently underrepresented in machine learning, including women, the support that they need to study at leading universities. Fees are paid in full and recipients are provided with guidance and support from DeepMind mentors.

DeepMind was established in 2010 in London and its DeepMind Scholarships are part of a wider initiative by the company to broaden participation in science and support the wider research ecosystem, including in Africa. Stellenbosch University is the first African university to be partnered with by the DeepMind organization.

 Eligibility of Stellenbosch University DeepMind Scholarship:

Applying students must meet the following criteria;

  • Be from a Sub-Saharan African country
  • Be in global machine learning field.
  • Applying students must possess a Bachelor degree in Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Mathematics or Mathematical Statistics.
  • Have a four-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.
  • Must be an NQF level 8 qualification deemed equivalent to the above, in a field closely related to ML and AI.
  • Have an existing and commendable proficiency in Python or an equivalent programming language.

How to Apply for Stellenbosch University DeepMind Scholarship:

  1. To apply for the Stellenbosch University DeepMind Scholarship, visit the applicant portal on the registration page, create a profile if you are a new applicant and log in. Application link later provided below.
  2. Click on the “Program selection”. and follow the prompts, example below;
  • Faculty: “Faculty of Science-Stellenbosch”
  • Programme type: “Postgraduate”
  • Program: “MSc (Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence)” and select if it is a full-time or part-time study.

Further more;

  1. Complete the required information from the menus on the left panel.
  2. Upload all required documents.
  3. Please note that you do not need to identify an academic supervisor. Accepted students will have an opportunity after the start of the program to interact with potential supervisors and indicate research project preferences.
  4. If you are contented with the terms, proceed to submit your application.

Note that: There is an application fee of R100 for South African applicants (no fee for international applicants or current SU students).

Document Required:

  • A comprehensive CV that include your academic transcript.
  • A letter of motivation.
  • A statement of research interest.

The letter of motivation can be short ( at least 1 page) on why you want to complete the program, what you hope to get out of it, and what you might want to do after the program. The statement of research interest can be a short (1 page) letter on any specific interests you currently have within the fields of ML and AI.
