Stanford Online Masters Grades & Policy

GRADES

Departments routinely evaluate the records of part-time students. If your grade point average falls short of the requirements, your graduate department or course advisors will let you know.

At the conclusion of each quarter, instructors post grades in AXESS. When you log into Axess, click the “student” page and then “academic history” to see your grade.

If your course offers the Pass/Fail or Credit/No Credit option, you can seek a change from a letter grade to that option through AXESS by the Grading Basis Deadline.

Before switching to the Pass/Fail or Credit/No Credit option, get your academic department’s clearance first because you might need a letter grade if the course counts toward your degree program.

You must observe the following Stanford policies if you are a registered student in a Stanford University course:

General University Policies: You must adhere to deadlines for submitting study lists, registering for classes, changing or dropping them, withdrawing from them, paying debts on time to avoid late penalties, submitting paperwork (such as a leave of absence), and choosing and submitting an exam monitor.

Important Dates & Deadlines for Stanford Online Masters Students:

Meeting a deadline will require having tangible evidence that a message or piece of content was sent and received successfully with a standardized date and time stamp, whether by email, mail, or phone, for all students pursuing individual graduate courses for credit. The usual Pacific Time Zone is used for all deadlines (PST or PDT). Academic deadline missed may affect your:

• Access to course materials and the instructor’s website
• Obtaining a financial refund
• Grades for a course or for a particular task, which may appear on permanent Stanford transcripts.
• Eligibility to add, drop, or alter a course.

Dropping a Course:

You have until 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time on the quarter’s drop deadline to withdraw from graduate course(s) and receive a full refund to your original payment method. From within Axess, remove the course(s). You won’t see the course on your Stanford transcript anymore.

Withdrawal from a Course:

After the final study list deadline, you cannot drop courses; however, you can withdraw from a course up until the withdrawal date. Your transcript will display a “W” in this instance (Withdraw). In the event that a student drops a course after the financial add/drop deadline, the institution, not SCPD, will assess a per diem fee.

Requesting the Status of an Incomplete Course

Work with the faculty to request a “Incomplete” for the course. This will stop your academic work. You have up to a year to pick up where you left off and finish the course for credit. Please send the formal approval to scpd-gradstudents@stanford.edu if your request is approved. Notify the Stanford Center for Professional Development and the course teaching staff at scpd-gradstudents@stanford.edu when you are prepared to restart your incomplete course. You won’t have to pay tuition or any other costs once more.

Taking a Voluntary Leave of Absence:

If master’s degree candidates won’t be able to maintain the necessary 3 units of enrollment per quarter, they can ask their department for a voluntary leave of absence (excluding summer). You will get a full tuition refund if you take a leave of absence before the start of classes and your registration for the term won’t be recorded in the university’s records.

You will be given a pro rata refund if you are an enrolled student in good standing who chooses to take a leave of absence after the start of classes but before the term withdrawal deadline. After the deadline for Term Withdrawal, there is no refund. Your record shows a grade of “W” for any courses you enrolled in after the Final Study List deadline (withdrew).

Taking a Course Again:

Any finished course may be re-enrolled in once for a new grade and the same amount of units. On your transcript, the initial grade will be changed to “RP” (repeated), and the units you earned will be removed. Your cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) and units earned will only count the second grade. You may enroll a third time for a fresh grade if you obtain a “NC” (no credit) or “NP” (not passed) for the repeated course. The grades and units for the second and third completed courses will also be recorded on your transcript and count toward your GPA under any other circumstances.

Stanford Online Masters – Venue & Technical Assistance

Getting Started with Computer Setup and Viewing Graduate Courses:

With a SUNet ID obtained after enrolling in a graduate course, you can:

• On your computer or a mobile device, stream your course live.
• Watch a video on demand (VOD) typically 20 minutes after the lesson has ended.
• To watch videos without an Internet connection, download them to your computer’s desktop.
• With variable speed playback, browse the content at your own pace.
• Any word that is said, appears in a slide, or is clearly printed on a white board can be found using smart search.

Downloading and Accessing Course Materials

The TEACH Act, also known as the Technology, Education and Copyright Harmonization Act of 2002, prohibits the downloading of courses to mobile devices. During the designated class periods, lectures can be streamed live, and around 20 to 30 minutes after those times, they can be downloaded.

You can watch lectures and videos that you have downloaded for the current academic quarter in which you are enrolled. You also concur that you WILL NOT:

• Share
• Upload to a location other than your own device(s) or the Internet for your own personal use.
• Sell or give away
• Edit or otherwise change the material.

Stanford Online Masters Tuition & Fees

Each course costs $1,400 in tuition. According to the course websites, each course has 3-5 units. A Master’s degree must be earned in 45 units of credit within five years after your start date.

Additional Fees:

For non-matriculated students in non-degree programs, the document charge is $125; for matriculated students admitted to a new degree, the document price is $250. (Not applicable if you had paid this price for a graduate course that counts toward your degree prior to beginning your program.)

Each fall, winter, or spring quarter that you are enrolled, you must pay the Associated Students of Stanford University (ASSU) Fee.

Payment Process and Method:

You will be notified to log into your mystanfordconnection account to arrange payment after our team has processed your enrolment. Thirty days following the beginning of each quarter’s classes, tuition and fees are due. Payment plans are not permitted; full payment of tuition and fees is required. Credit cards, wire transfers, direct invoices to businesses, purchase orders, business vouchers, letters of credit, business checks, and Yellow Ribbon tuition benefits are all acceptable forms of payment (for veterans).

A receipt will be delivered to your email account automatically if you pay with a credit card. Your mystanfordconnection account’s preferred email address will get the receipt.

Stanford Online Masters Requirements

1. Enroll in a course whenever it is being offered.
2. Course prerequisites must be fully satisfied in order for admission to be considered.
3. Send in your application whenever you like.
4. To continue taking classes through Stanford Online, you must receive a grade of B or above (or 3.0) in each subject.
