Summary of the Rutgers CRNA Program:

The COA granted the Rutgers CRNA program full re-accreditation in 2008 for a maximum of 10 years. Each year, 24 students are accepted, with the ninth cohort beginning in 2012. Each fall semester, Rutgers University start its 72-credit program, which lasts for 28 months (seven semesters) of full-time study. Part-time students are not accepted by the university. Numerous MSN core courses are transferable from other schools or can be studied prior to enrolling in the anesthesia program. The Program Director and the Dean of Graduate Studies must both approve of one of these choices.

Rutgers CRNA Program Curriculum

One eight-hour day of the clinical experience is the first step in the second semester. This serves as a clinical anesthetic primer. The learner can combine classroom learning with practical application. The amount of clinical time increases to 12–16 hours each week in semester III. The students are expected to do a full-time clinical rotation, approximately 36 to 40 hours per week, during semesters IV through VII in addition to taking didactic courses.

There are now 13 approved clinical sites for Rutgers University throughout New Jersey and New York. University Hospital in Newark serves as their main clinical location.

Rutgers CRNA Program Requirements

1. Bachelor’s Degree is required:

A nursing baccalaureate from a program with national accreditation.

2. RN:

Any state’s current RN license must be submitted with your application. If you are accepted, you must first earn a NJ and NY RN license before matriculating.

3. Intensive/Critical Care

A minimum of one full year of recent, full-time experience as a registered professional nurse in a critical care setting, as well as proof of competence in administering vasoactive IV infusions, managing aggressive fluid balance, managing mechanical ventilation, managing invasive hemodynamic monitoring, and caring for critically ill patients.

Experience in critical care is preferred in the following areas:

• Surgery ICU
• Cardiopulmonary ICU
• Neurosurgery ICU
• Fire ICU
• Child’s ICU

They may consider:

Choose a PACU (Post Anesthesia Care Unit) if the level of care matches that of other ICUs.

Unacceptable:

• ER (Emergency Room)
• OR (Operating Room)
• Infant ICU

ADVICE: During the interview process, your knowledge of pharmacology will be evaluated. When working in your critical care unit, ask questions.

3. GPA:

GPA of 3.2, where A=4.0. They will never give an applicant with a GPA of less than 3.0 a chance. Science course grades are heavily evaluated. GPA plays a significant role in the hiring process. It is NOT necessary to have a minimum GRE score.

4. International Students:

Students who did not complete their education at a college or university in the United States are required to submit an official transcript evaluation by WES or CGFNS as well as their IELTS test scores.

For all candidates who did not receive their degree from a US institution or university:

• The required TOEFL paper-based score is 550.
• The required TOEFL computer-based minimum score is 213
• The bare minimal IBT-based TOEFL score (Writing 22, Speaking 23, Reading 21, Listening 17)

5. Certifications:

• ACLS (Advanced Life Support) (Advanced Life Support)
• Candidates invited for interviews will be asked for their CCRN exam results.
• Applications must be accompanied by certificates.
