Rhodes scholarship

The Rhodes scholarship is the oldest international scholarship program in the world, and one of the most prestigious. The program is administered trust in oxford and offers 100 fully funded scholarship each year for  post graduate studies at the university of oxford in the united kingdom. Rhodes scholarship are for young leaders of outstanding intellect and character who are motivated to engage with global challenge, committed to the service of others and show promise of becoming value-driven, principled leaders for the world leaders.

In essence,The Rhodes scholarships offer fully-funded awards to successful candidates in terms of full tuition waiver and an annual stipend of stipend is £17,310 per annum. Each year, the Rhodes Trust Scholarships are offered to more than 90 Rhodes Scholars selected from 20 Rhodes constituencies (64 countries) worldwide  to study for postgraduate degree at university of Oxford. They are outstanding young women and men of diverse backgrounds and interests who show strong potential to be public-spirited leaders for the world’s future.

However, one of the founding aims of the scholarship was to identify young leaders from around  the world, who through the pursuit of education together at oxford, would form bond of mutual understanding and fellowship for the betterment of mankind.

Eligibility of Rhodes scholarship:

To apply for this United Kingdom scholarship program, candidates must meet the following criteria.

  • Nationality/citizenship: You must be a citizen of one of the following countries: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, the island of Saint Helena, Senegal, Sierra Leone, São Tomé and Principe and Togo.

  • Education/residency: You must have been resident in one or more of the countries listed above for at least five of the last ten years.

Age: Upon 1 October 2022, you must meet either of the criteria below:

  • You must be at least 18 and have not reached your 25th birthday (i.e. you must have been born after 1 October 1997 and on or before 1 October 2004). OR for medical, dental, and pharmaceutical students, to allow you to complete your internship.
  • You must be at least 18 and have not reached your 26th birthday (i.e. you must have been born after 1 October 1996 and on or before 1 October 2004). OR for older candidates who completed their first undergraduate degree later than usual.
  • Academic achievement: You must have already completed, by July 2023, an undergraduate degree (normally a Bachelor’s degree) with an academic background and grade that is a First-Class Honours Degree or equivalent which meets or exceeds the specific entry requirements of your chosen full-time course at the University of Oxford.
  • English language: You must have a sufficiently high standard of English to meet the English language proficiency requirements of the University of Oxford
  • If unsuccessful in your first application to the Rhodes Scholarships, you may subsequently re-apply only once more (and this must be in the same constituency), subject to meeting the eligibility criteria.

How to apply for Rhodes scholarship:

For detailed application requirements for each constituency, please visit the country pages via the country links.  In broad terms, all constituencies will require the following materials in differing forms:

  • Evidence of academic record / transcript (complete or in progress) of undergraduate degree and any postgraduate study
  • Curriculum vitae/resumé or list of principal activities
  • Personal statement or essay (including, crucially, a clear statement of what the applicant wishes to study at Oxford and why)
  • Evidence of age / birth certificate / passport
  • English Language proficiency (where English is not the first language)
  • Photograph
  • List of referees (usually several are required) who can attest in confidential references to the character and intellect of the applicant, including academic, personal, extra-curricular and leadership achievements (and who should never include people to whom you are related)

Documents required:

One or more of the following documents to confirm that you meet the citizenship criterion, the residency criterion, and the age criterion:

    • certified copy of your birth certificate (or an affidavit of birth)
    • National Identity Card.
    • valid passport (with translation, if necessary)
    • voter’s card
    • An affidavit notarised by a competent authorirt confirming that you are a bonafide citizen of your country
  • An official transcript from the college or university at which you are studying, or have studied, showing grades achieved (to date).
  • Evidence of residency within the region for at least five of the last ten years, for example official school records.
  • If English is not your first language, you should upload evidence of English Language Proficiency (e.g. TOEFL / IELTS)
  • A full curriculum vitae which should include details about academic qualifications, prizes, scholarships, positions of leadership, employment positions, involvement in student, voluntary, community or political activities, and any cultural, musical,or sporting accomplishments. This should not exceed two pages of 12-point Times Roman font and should not include supporting documents. Please do not include a photograph in your CV.
  • A head-and-shoulders color photograph (JPG format).
  • An academic statement of study of no more than 350 words
  • A personal statement of no more than 750 words.
  • You will need to provide a list of four (minimum) to six (maximum) people (your referees) who are willing to submit references on your behalf:

Please do not upload documents, certificates, testimonials, or links / URLs other than those required. All applications must be submitted online. No alternate method of application is accepted. There is no application fee for the submission  of the Rhodes Scholarship application form. References must be written in English and must be uploaded by 23:59, GMT, 30 September 2022.
