Parsons Acceptance Rate 2023

Parsons Acceptance Rate. Private art and design school Parsons School of Design, also referred to as Parsons, is situated in New York City’s Lower Manhattan district of Greenwich Village. It is one of The New School’s five colleges.

William Merritt Chase established the institution in 1896 in an effort to foster autonomous artistic expression. Offering courses in fashion design, advertising, interior design, and graphic design made it the first institution of its kind in the nation. The institution offers graduate and undergraduate degrees in a variety of fields, including architectural design, curatorial studies, textiles and design, and urban ecologies.

Fashion designers, photographers, business owners, designers, illustrators, and artists who have made important contributions to their industries are among Parsons alumni. The college belongs to both the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.

Parsons’ campus is dispersed across several buildings, like that of the majority of institutions in New York City, but its main structure is found at Fifth Avenue and 13th Street. The facilities listed are primarily proprietary to Parsons, while many other facilities are in buildings shared by other colleges of The New School. Additionally, Parsons maintains a campus abroad called Parsons Paris, which is situated in the First Arrondissement of Paris.

Parsons School of Design Acceptance Rate

63% of applicants are accepted at Parsons. 7,632 undergraduates are enrolled at The New School, the parent institution of Parsons. Nearly a third of students are international, hailing from more than 115 different nations.

Which applicants are accepted by Parsons is determined by the Admission Committee in what way?

Most of the “weight” in the admissions process is placed on a select few factors. The Common Application essay response, in particular, receives extra attention from the application readers. The latter is optional, however we strongly advise pupils to finish it.

Additionally, Parsons seeks to recruit gifted authors, thinkers, and innovators. The Parsons Challenge online portfolio components, which we will go through in more detail in the next sections, are heavily weighted in favor of BFA candidates.

While an applicant’s academic records, test scores, and letters of recommendation are unquestionably important, the Admission Committee can learn more about the applicant’s potential for success at Parsons by looking at the application’s more open-ended, creative components.

Parsons School of Design Alumni

Many influential figures in the field of design call Parsons their home.

World-famous costume designers, filmmakers, interior designers, computer designers, and fine painters are among the school’s distinguished alumni. Tom Ford is one of the most well-known Parsons names. He is also a filmmaker. Ford began his fashion line in 2005 and has since enjoyed international success. He is best recognized for bringing new life to the ailing Gucci brand.

Ford actually earned a degree in interior architecture before going on to work for several fashion businesses, which is a fascinating tidbit. Gilbert Adrian, one of the most significant Hollywood costume designers in history, also attended Parsons.

Some of Adrian’s best inventions, such as Dorothy’s blue and white gingham dress and ruby red slippers from The Wizard of Oz, will undoubtedly be recognizable to you. When Adrian added shoulder pads to Joan Crawford’s outfits, a more masculine silhouette was adopted by women as men enlisted in the war effort.

American director Joel Schumacher began his studies at Parsons as a fashion designer. He oversaw the production of Batman Forever, Batman & Robin, The Phantom of the Opera, and a number of House of Cards episodes. Fashion enthusiasts might be familiar with the names of Parsons graduates James Mischka and Mark Badgley. The American design company Badgley Mischka was founded by the two and is well recognized for its Old Hollywood-inspired shoes and dresses.

Other notable Parsons alums include the creator of DwellStudio Christiane Lemieux, the painters Jasper Johns and Normal Rockwell, and apparel designer Alexander Wang.

Parsons GPA & SAT/ACT Requirements

No minimum SAT or ACT scores are required for admission to Parsons School of Design, nor is there a required grade point average.

However, there is some competition for admission, and the institution makes the GPA and test-score ranges for accepted students public. Before enrolling in Parsons School of Design, 31% of accepted students maintained a GPA of 3.75 to 4.0, which equates to receiving As in the most, if not all, of their high school courses.

The GPA range for the majority of first-year students who entered Parsons was between 3.25 and 3.75. Only 8% of those who were accepted had a cumulative GPA in the 2.5 to 2.99 range. We can presume that the window of test score ranges is comparable even if Parsons School of Design has not separated its standardized test scores from The New School overall.

The New School most recently reported an average ACT composite range of 25–30, which is thought to be relatively high yet doable. Incoming students ranged from 1150 to 1380 on the combined SAT Math and Evidence-based Reading and Writing portions. SAT or ACT scores are not required to be submitted as part of the application process at The New School or Parsons.

Students may still decide to submit their test results if they think doing so will make their applications more competitive. Standardized test results are not a key consideration in the overall application assessment, so it may be more beneficial to concentrate your efforts on other application elements, which we’ll go into more detail about in the next sections.

How to Get Into Parsons School of Design

Candidates for the Parsons School of Design begin the application process by sending The New School their Common Application.

If a candidate can demonstrate their veteran status, Fulbright Scholar status, or affiliation with organizations like the Peace Corps, Teach for America, and AmeriCorps, to mention a few, a cost of $50 for domestic applicants in the United States (or $75 for international applicants) may be avoided. The required essays, one of the most important components of the Parsons application, will now be the focus of your attention.

The Admissions Committee mandated two prompts last year. Students were invited to write 200–400 words describing what they like about The New School and what social issue or construct they hope to improve through their academic endeavors at The New School. Students will invite people to contribute a variety of resources on their behalf.

These consist of the School Report, official high school transcripts, and any college transcripts, as well as two letters of recommendation, one from a teacher and one from a counselor (if the student is applying as a transfer). As was already mentioned, students are not required to submit their SAT or ACT scores to Parsons.

However, they request that all candidates whose first language is not English submit their most recent results from an English language proficiency exam (from the past two years). The TOEFL is usually sufficient.

The exciting part is about to begin with the portfolio and Parsons Challenge. A portfolio of 8–12 slides must be submitted by BFA applicants to the admissions committee. The slides can contain a variety of media, and students are encouraged to showcase their breadth of knowledge as well as their willingness to take creative risks and experiment.

The Parsons Challenge encourages applicants to create a new visual work that is inspired by a piece from their portfolios, whereas the portfolio concentrates on earlier work. A 500-word essay on the inspiration for and the creative process used to create the new piece must be submitted with it.

Students can create collages, film, take pictures, paint, sculpt, and more! The purpose is to demonstrate how they chose media, develop ideas, and present a theme through that media.

Should You Apply to The New School Parsons School of Design?

Consider applying to the Parsons School of Design if you’re a creative student who is driven to pursue a profession in design. After all, the school is proud to hold the top national spot among design schools in the QS World Rankings for 2021! 2,000+ students get work-study grants, and financial help is available to 85% of all New School students.

The financial aid packages at Parsons include scholarships, grants, fellowships, and stipends.

Additionally, Parsons school provides work-study opportunities, loans, military programs, and grants. Merit scholarships are a given to every student accepted to Parsons. To be eligible for need-based financial help, applicants must submit the FAFSA and other necessary financial aid documentation.

The FAFSA deadline for fall candidates is February 1 and for spring applicants is November 1. The early action program at Parsons is another reason why creative students ought to apply.

Because early action applicants receive their admission decisions many months before regular decision applicants, those who are admitted through the early action cycle can relax a little more during their senior year and concentrate on ending the year strong.

Mid-December sees the distribution of fall early action admission notices; mid-March sees the release of fall regular decision decisions; and mid-November sees the gradual distribution of spring decisions. Applying at Parsons school is a no-brainer with everything the vibrant New York City area has to offer its creatively inclined students!
