This Oxford Brookes University Sanctuary Scholarship is intended for students who are unable to access government academic aid and those who are protected in some way from an asylum claim.

Mission & Advantages of the Oxford Brookes University Sanctuary Scholarship

There will be one scholarship available for students entering in 2023/24, and it will include:

  • A complete fee waiver, meaning there are no fees to pay.
  • A £4,000 cash bursary.
  • £8,000 worth of financial assistance for housing. Those residing in residence halls will automatically get financial assistance; those residing in private housing will need to show documentation of their living expenses in accordance with the terms and conditions of the scholarship.
  • 52 weeks of guaranteed housing in university residence halls each year.

Qualification Standards for the Oxford Brookes University Sanctuary Scholarship

Students who meet the necessary course admission requirements and who do not currently receive or qualify for government student financial support and who have one of the following immigration statuses are eligible to apply:

  • Seeking asylum,
  • An unaccompanied minor requesting refuge,
  • Limited permission to stay (as a result of an application for asylum,
  • Discretionary leave to remain (after an application for asylum),
  • A member of the household with “in line” or “dependent” status who has one of the aforementioned immigration statuses.
  • Students who have received an offer (or are awaiting a decision) for a full-time undergraduate or postgraduate taught degree, including foundation year courses, are eligible to apply for the scholarship. Partner Colleges’ courses are not admissible.

Selection Criteria

For 2023 only, applicants must abide by the following:

  • There will be competition in this procedure, thus not every application will be accepted.
  • The scholars must not be receiving government student loans or be eligible for them.
  • In order to enroll at Oxford Brookes for the academic year 2023–2024, a scholar must anticipate fulfilling all of the requirements linked with their offer in due time.
  • Scholars are required to enroll in a full-time undergraduate or graduate taught program, including courses for the foundation year. Partner Colleges’ courses are not admissible.
  • The length of the scholarship will be determined by the normal length of the student’s studies, and it will be renewed each year. Any upcoming payments will be stopped if students drop out or put a halt to their education.
  • If they successfully complete the foundation year, students enrolled in an Integrated Foundation Course will automatically advance to their degree and earn the scholarship for the full four years.
  • Only applications that are accompanied by a referee supporting statement that is signed and dated will be taken into consideration.
  • Successful candidates will need to submit paperwork, such as a Biometric Residence Permit, Home Office letters, or a solicitor’s letter, to prove their current immigration status. If you are unsure of your present immigration status or if you are mentioned as a dependent on a family member’s immigration application, please contact your lawyer or your family.
  • If you are awarded the scholarship, you must notify the university right once if any of your circumstances, particularly those relating to your immigration status, change before or during your course of study or program.
  • Your Sanctuary Scholarship will expire if your immigration status changes (for instance, to refugee or humanitarian protection) and you become qualified for government student aid.

How to Apply

Prior to submitting an application for the Sanctuary Scholarship, candidates must submit a UCAS application and accept a place offer from the Admissions Team.

Please read the Oxford Brookes University Sanctuary Scholarship’s terms and conditions before completing the online application, which includes a place for a personal statement. Your eligibility for the Sanctuary Scholarship is evaluated in this section. Please make sure the following is included in your responses:

  • Your motivation for pursuing higher education, as well as your future goals and aspirations and how your selected course will support these.
  • The challenges you’ve encountered when pursuing your education further and how you’ve attempted to overcome them.
  • Information about your financial situation and any prior financing applications you may have made.

Only applications that are accompanied by a referee supporting statement that is signed and dated will be taken into consideration. This must be included in the web form as an attachment. Additionally, applicants will need to present proof of their immigration status.
