Notorious Krewe of the Peg Leg Pirate Scholarship

The Notorious Krewe of the Peg Leg Pirate is a scholarship for aspiring college amputees. It is provided annually by the Krewe, a Florida based Recognized Charitable Orgnisation. As part of  their support, the organisation has been donating tricycles, hand-cycles and providing scholarships to amputees for more than 17 years. Since inception, the Krewe has awarded 99 scholarships which adds up to about $114,000.

The main goal of the Krewe scholarship is to provide equipment and/or services that will improve the quality of life of successful applicants. Also, as true promoters of inclusivity, there is no discrimination with respect to the age, race, sex, color, religion, national origin, marital status, personal appearance, or sexual orientation of applicants.

Details of Notorious Krewe of the Peg Leg Pirate Scholarship

  • LEVEL: College and trade/technical school.
  • FUNDING: The number of scholarships and the amount given are based on the availability of funds raised through donations from supporters.
  • ELIGIBLE NATIONALITIES: Open to students of any nationality.
  • COUNTRY: International
  • UNIVERSITY: Any desired university.
  • FIELD OF STUDY: Any desired field.

The Krewe Board of Directors will discuss on the recommendations made by the scholarship committee in April, while scholarship winners will be notified at their schools’ award night. If there is no award night, awardees will be notified by May 1st.  Also, the awardees will be announced in June while the funds will be disbursed in July.

Eligibility for Notorious Krewe of the Peg Leg Pirate Scholarship

Applying student must;

  1. Be an amputee;
  2. Be a College and trade/technical school student;
  3. Have a grade point average of 3.5;

Required Documents

  • Two recommendations (one from a doctor, a physical therapist or other medical personnel/provider, and the other from a teacher or counselor from a High School or previous College attendance.
  • An essay explaining your future goals (Maximum of 300 words).
  • The completed Peg Leg application form.
  • Academic transcript from previous High School or College
  • A copy of your last IRS tax return. If you are being claimed on your parent’s tax return, a copy of their return is also acceptable.
  • An acceptance letter from the preferred Institution.
