Kochi University of Technology Scholarship

The Kochi University of Technology Scholarship on research projects in the field of Engineering for International Doctoral applicants for the 2023/2024 academic year in Japan is open for application.

Kochi University of Technology Special Scholarship Program (SSP) was launched in 2003 with the prospective of supporting the advanced research of the university by enlisting the help of highly capable students especially students from foreign countries. In accordance to the university academic calendar, every year in April and October, the Kochi university of Technology admits selected doctoral students for specific research projects.

The students pursue the doctoral program in English excluding Japanese students while at the same time, assisting their host professor as a research assistant (RA). Through this program Kochi University of Technology wishes to expand and deepen international relations and diplomacy with academic and educational institutions all over the world.

Eligibility of The Kochi University of Technology Scholarship:

To be considered for the scholarship, applicants must:

  • Note that the Special Scholarship Program (SSP) is only for doctoral candidates and project-based.
  • Have completed or be scheduled to acquire a master’s degree before the KUT enrollment date
  • Be at the limit of 35 years old or below at the time of admission.
  • Possess an excellent academic record and considerable bachelor’s and master’s degrees from reputable/accredited universities.
  • Have the intention, adequate knowledge and research skill to work in one of the designated research projects
  • Be high in English proficiency. English Language is the official instructional language, so, as an applicant, you must have at least basic English Language understanding.

Expected Obligations:

The following are expected of selected students during their studentship;

  1. The SSP student must work 50 hours per month for a specific research project at the university.
  2. The SSP student must report his/her study and research achievements to the dean of the Graduate School of Engineering at the end of each semester. The submitted report will be evaluated by the dean of the Graduate School of Engineering.

How to Apply for The Kochi University of Technology Scholarship:

  • Choose one research project from the SSP Research Project List on the registration page.
  • Send a completed Pre-Application Request to the leader of your preferred project by e-mail and obtain the leader’s permission to apply for that SSP project. Only one pre-application request should be sent to the leader of a project during a given enrollment period. The project leader’s email address is provided in the project’s description. Please note that a project leader may not contact you in the case where your pre-application request is rejected.
  • When you obtain the permission of the project leader, complete all required documents and submit them to KUT by post. The documents must reach KUT by the deadline. Application link later provided below.

Benefits of Kochi University of Technology Scholarship:

Selected students will receive the following benefits;

  • Exemption from 30,000 yen entrance examination fee, 300,000 yen enrollment fee and 535,800 yen/year tuition fee
  • To support living expenses, 150,000 yen/month is paid as salary for research project work.
    *You must pay some amount of taxes from this salary.
  • 150,000 yen is provided for travel and initial living costs. (given only to international applicants who are living outside Japan, and who have, or have the intention to acquire, “Student” status of Japanese residence at the time of entry into Japan)
  • The term will be extended for increments of one year up to a total of three years, unless the university terminates the SSP student status for any of the reasons against the institution’s law of studentship.

Document Required:

  • A copy of an email or other communication which clearly shows that the leader of the intending applicant’s preferred project has given the intending applicant permission to apply for that SSP project
  • Signed pre-application request
  • Original bachelor’s degree academic transcript in English or Japanese (Include date of issue)
  • Original master’s degree academic transcript
  • Original master’s degree certificate in English or Japanese
  • A copy of the intending applicant’s master’s thesis in English
  • Research Outline
  • Signed recommendation letters in English or Japanese
  • Original certificate of health in English or Japanese issued within the past 6 months
  • Certificate of English ability: TOEFL iBT, IELTS, CET-6 or WSK

You can also provide these if you have access to them for more consideration advantage;

  • Rank certificate (in English or Japanese) for bachelor’s and master’s program issued by the university, indicating your rank in the class (e.g. 2nd out of 25 students )
  • Copies/Links of your past publications.
  • Copy of your passport or other identification documents such as citizenship certificate, birth certificate, etc.
