John Hamel Macgregor MBBS Scholarships 2024

For the John Hamel Macgregor MBBS Scholarships, an award of up to $10,000 is available to MBChB students who, before finishing their MBChB, enroll full- or part-time in the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences’ postgraduate research program or BMedSci(Hons).

The Trust Fund was created in 1989 by Auckland resident Mrs. I. M. Gill’s estate. The John Hamel MacGregor Trust Trustees have established awards to assist medical students wishing to enroll in the University of Auckland’s Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences and pursue a BMedSci or postgraduate research degree.

Eligiblity Requirements for the John Hamel Macgregor MBBS Scholarships

  • For a maximum of one year, up to five awards with a maximum value of $10,000 each will be given out each year.
  • New Zealand citizens must get at least half of the awards.
  • Pro rata payment will be made to part-time students.
  • In order to be considered for an award, an applicant must: i) have successfully completed Part III of the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) in the year of application; ii) be enrolled in, or plan to enroll in, a postgraduate research degree offered by the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences at Waipapa Taumata Rau | University of Auckland, or a Bachelor of Medical Science (Honours) (BMedSci(Hons) in the following year before resuming and finishing their MBChB program.
  • To be eligible for the John Hamel Macgregor MBBS Scholarships an applicant must have a grade point average (GPA) of at least 7.00 (6.50 for Māori and Pacific candidates).
  • Both domestic and overseas students may tenaciously pursue the Award, subject to Regulation 2.
  • The selection process will be based on the applicant’s financial need as shown by a personal statement, academic merit, and the type and quality of their research project.
  • The Dean of the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences (or a nominee), the Associate Dean (Postgraduate) of the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences (or a nominee), and one additional faculty member nominated by the Dean of the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences will make up the Selection Committee that will recommend the Award to the University of Auckland Council.
  • Beginning in Semester One, the Award will be paid as soon as it is feasible upon confirmation of the awardee’s enrollment (i.e., following the deadline for students to add or remove courses without being charged a late enrollment fee). The Award will be given as a fortnightly stipend. Pro rata payment will be made to part-time students.
  • Awardees must be enrolled in a postgraduate research program or a BMedSci(Hons) at the University of Auckland Waipapa Taumata Rau’s Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences in order to receive the Award.

As long as the University of Auckland Council gives its approval and the regulations governing that scholarship, award, or grant allow, the Award may be given in conjunction with any other scholarship, grant, or award. The awardee bears the duty of disclosing to the Scholarships Office all other grants, scholarships, or awards that they have been granted and for which they are being paid in addition to this award.

  • In the event that no candidate satisfies the requirements or has enough merit, the University of Auckland Council is not required to give an award.
  • If the Associate Dean (Postgraduate) of the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences reports to the University of Auckland Council that a Scholar’s progress has not been adequate, the Council may decide to cancel or suspend the Award.
  • As long as funds are utilized to support an awardee’s living expenses while enrolled in school or to cover program-related fees, payments made under the provisions of this Award are tax-free. The Award will be terminated for noncompliance with this regulation.
  • As long as the primary goal of the Award is not compromised, the University of Auckland Council may change or modify these rules.
  • The Scholarships Office closes applications on November 8 of the year before the award.
