A) Students who:

  • are college students at institutions outside of Slovakia;
  • are master’s students, students in the second level of higher education, or students who, as of the application deadline, have finished at least 2.5 years of university coursework within the same program;
  • who will be enrolled in a study program in Slovakia while pursuing their higher education elsewhere and who will be granted academic mobility1 to study in Slovakia by a public, private, or state university in Slovakia.

All three requirements must be satisfied. Studies leading to a doctoral degree (or an equivalent) do not fall under this category.

  • Duration of a scholarship stay (students): 1–2 full semesters (i.e., 4–5 or 9–10 months) or complete 1–3 trimesters (i.e., 3–4 or 6–7 or 9–10 months) if the academic year is divided into trimesters.

B) PhD students accepted by a public, private, or state university or research institution in Slovakia that is eligible to carry out a doctoral study program (such as the Slovak Academy of Sciences) for an academic mobility to study, conduct research, or stay in Slovakia as an artist.

  • Scholarship stays for PhD students might last between one and ten months.

C) Foreign university professors, researchers, and artists who have been invited to Slovakia by an organization that holds a current certificate of eligibility to conduct research and development but is not a business corporation and has its headquarters there.

  • Scholarship stays can last between one and ten months for university instructors, researchers, or artists.

Any person from any nation can apply for a scholarship stay in Slovakia through the NSP, with the exception of Slovakian nationals.

The National Scholarship Program does not provide funding for:

  • International students and PhD candidates approved for full-degree higher education (bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral studies) in Slovakia, as well as those pursuing full-degree higher education in Slovakia and wishing to have their studies funded by the NSP;

  • Applicants from outside Slovakia who are recipients of scholarships through other public scholarship programs (such as the International Visegrad Fund, Erasmus+, CEEPUS, bilateral agreements, etc.).

How to Apply for Slovakia Government Scholarships

The Slovakia Government Scholarship application must be submitted electronically, and all deadlines must be met. It is best to secure a visa as soon as you can to prevent late submissions because some students require one in order to enter and remain in Slovakia.

In the declaration, the applicant explains why he or she was unable to obtain the required document, as well as the year, level (i.e., bachelor’s or master’s studies, or other equivalent), and anticipated completion date of the course of study. If such an application is to receive a scholarship, he or she must present an official confirmation from the university that matches the stated facts regarding studies before the applicant is given the formal letter of award. The administrator of the scholarship program will decide when the confirmation must be submitted.

  • A copy of the applicant’s bachelor’s degree, the diploma supplement, and, if applicable, their state examination certificate;
  • Admissions letter or invitation from the applicant’s host university in Slovakia detailing the duration of the stay. Admission/invitation letters are official documents that are typically printed on the letterhead of the respective university, signed by the person who has issued the letter, and contain that person’s position and contact information. If printing on the institution’s letterhead paper is not an option, the letter must clearly state the affiliation of the person who issued the letter (generally the institution’s name, add Admission letters should be sent out for the same amount of time that the applicant specified in their online application, and they cannot be more than three months old on the day that the application deadline is reached.
