Is Vet School harder than Med School?

In recent years, applying to vet school has become slightly more difficult than applying to med school. The prevailing opinion, particularly among veterinary professionals, would have you believe that applying to veterinary school is more competitive than applying to medical school.

What You Need to Apply to Veterinary School

No professional program places higher standards on its incoming students. Remember that each institution has its own standards, which I’ve listed here with permission from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. It is therefore not precise.

For applications, all veterinary schools demand 45 to 90 semester hours of undergraduate coursework. Forty to sixty hours a week seem to be the norm for medical schools.

Pre-veterinary prerequisites are essentially the same as those for medical school, which include.

  • general biology,
  • genetics,
  • cell biology,
  • microbiology,
  • calculus,
  • organic and inorganic chemistry,
  • physics,
  • biochemistry, and
  • a combination of basic human science courses.

Under the program, prospective veterinarians are also lecturers, including

  • animal biology,
  • animal nutrition,
  • animal feed science,
  • vertebrate embryology,
  • zoology, and
  • physiology.

Veterinary colleges vary widely on this subject, whereas medical schools just demand the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT). 78% of programs accept the MCAT, 15% accept the Veterinary College Entrance Test (VCAT), and 78% require the Graduate Registration Exam (GRE).

A specific number of hours must be spent working directly with animals in a veterinary or zoological practice, animal, or laboratory in order to graduate from a veterinary curriculum. Many need a candidate to have completed hundreds of hours of experience.

In contrast, there is no such requirement in human medicine, despite the fact that it is both obvious and very advantageous for applicants to present comparable qualifications.

The acceptance rates for medical school programs are, nonetheless, quite high. In 2010, only 9% of those who applied to medical schools were accepted, according to US News and World Report. What does this mean in terms of the acceptance rate for veterans? I was able to locate the admission rates for roughly 10 programs in 2010 out of the 28 veterinary colleges in the US.
