The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program offers support to the top postdoctoral candidates from throughout the world who will significantly advance the nation’s social, economic, and scientific advancement.

Each year, Canada’s three federal grant-making organizations—the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC)—will jointly distribute 70 new two-year fellowships.

Eligibility Criteria for The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship programs

The following requirements must be satisfied by applicants in order to be eligible for The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship programs:

  • English is a required language.
  • All nations in the world are eligible.
  • All qualifications for a PhD, PhD-equivalent, or health professional degree must be met or have been met for applicants to the 2023–24 Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program:
  1. prior to their award’s start date, between September 15, 2020, and September 30, 2024 (all dates combined).
  2. Applicants who at the time of application have not completed all criteria for their degree must provide proof by October 15, 2024.
  • The eligibility window only applies to the most recent PhD, PhD-equivalent, or health professional degree for applicants who have earned more than one of these degrees.

  • Message the supervisor or host institution of your choice.
  • Complete cooperation with the possible host institution is required when submitting applications.
  • The institution’s president (or designate) must give their approval before applicants are accepted.
  • The documentation needed for referees and the institution they recommend receiving the applicant’s application from to compose their individual letters are the applicant’s responsibility.
