AbdulAzeez Shobajo from Nigeria is WSV Young Scholar of the Month – September 2023
Shobajo AbdulAzeez: A Journey of Academic Excellence and Environmental Advocacy”
In the heart of Nigeria, a young boy named Shobajo AbdulAzeez embarked on a remarkable journey that would lead him to become a global force in the field of biogas research. His story is not only a testament to his academic excellence but also an inspiring tale of unwavering determination and a passion for positive change.
Early Beginnings and Hunger for Knowledge:
AbdulAzeez’s educational journey began at the African Church Grammar School in Abeokuta, Ogun State. Despite facing the challenges of limited resources and a challenging environment, he displayed exceptional dedication to his studies and earned his Senior Secondary Certificate Examination with distinction in 2011. It was during this time that his hunger for knowledge and his desire to make a meaningful impact on his community first took root. After completing his secondary education, AbdulAzeez was determined to continue his academic journey and further his pursuit of knowledge. He enrolled in the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Soil Science and Land Management in 2019. During his undergraduate years, his curiosity led him to conduct research on changes in soil particle distribution and saturated hydraulic conductivity under different times of cassava production, showcasing his early aptitude for scientific inquiry.
AbdulAzeez’s thirst for knowledge knew no bounds. He continued his academic journey by pursuing a Master of Science degree in Tropical Crop Management and Ecology at the prestigious Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague, Czechia. His thesis, titled “Potential of Sugarcane Bagasse as a Feedstock for Biogas Production in Nigeria,” not only reflected his commitment to addressing global sustainability challenges but also marked the beginning of his journey into the world of biogas research.
Making a Difference and Awards: Throughout his academic journey, AbdulAzeez never limited himself to the confines of a classroom. He actively sought opportunities to give back to his community and make a positive impact. At the age of 12, he volunteered for the National Agency for the Control of Aids (NACA), engaging in education, counseling, advocacy, and fundraising to support the organization’s mission of controlling and preventing HIV/AIDS in Africa. His dedication earned him recognition as the most outstanding volunteer of the organization at that tender age.
In 2018, AbdulAzeez convened the Abeokuta TechRendezvous, a groundbreaking tech event aimed at bringing together young adults, entrepreneurs, and tech enthusiasts in Abeokuta. The event provided a digital space for individuals to discover their purpose within the IT industry and embark on a journey to fulfill their potential.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, AbdulAzeez’s commitment to his community shone brightly. He donated an automated hand sensing water and soap tank to Maraba Motor Park in Ilorin, Nigeria, promoting frequent hand washing and hygiene practices to combat the virus. This act of community service earned him recognition from the Kwara State government as the Most Outstanding Corps Member in the state, as well as prestigious awards from UNESCO and The Hackster Impact Protect Award. Notably, he was also granted the Tony Elumelu Foundation Grant for his outstanding contributions.
A Vision for a Greener World:
Today, AbdulAzeez stands on the cusp of a promising academic and professional career. His passion for biogas research, environmental sustainability, and knowledge sharing drives him to explore cutting-edge research in renewable energy sources. He envisions a world where biogas plays a pivotal role in addressing energy needs while mitigating environmental impacts.
AbdulAzeez’s journey from a Nigerian to the global stage of biogas research serves as an inspiration to countless others. He firmly believes that with unwavering determination, hard work, and a commitment to making a difference, anyone can overcome challenges and achieve academic excellence. His story serves as a reminder that education is a powerful tool for transformation and that even in the face of adversity, one person can make a profound impact on the world.
As Shobajo AbdulAzeez continues his pursuit of a Ph.D. in Biogas Research and endeavors to create a more sustainable future, his story serves as a beacon of hope for those who dare to dream, persevere, and aspire to change the world through academic excellence and a passion for positive change.
In his own words during his master’s graduation speech:
“It is gratifying to align my research with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Specifically, my work contributes to SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, by promoting the use of biogas as a renewable energy source. Additionally, my research addresses SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, by exploring innovative ways to repurpose agricultural waste.
Ecosystems around the world, from the Amazon to the Antarctic, are on the verge of collapse owing to human encroachment and exploitation, pollution, water scarcity, and the impacts of global warming.
The antecedents of COVID-19, recent burning of the Amazon forest, landslides, droughts, glaciers are some of the challenges the Earth faces today, as a result of inadequate environmental management and sustainability.
There is a need to communicate the urgency to act upon what we are continually learning about the Earth, before the ramifications of our actions become further catastrophic. It is imperative that global standards of living are progressed in a way that promotes harmony throughout the environmental and social realms, without compromising future needs.
I am excited about the positive impact my research can have on sustainable agriculture, waste management, and the fight against climate change. Together, let’s work towards a greener and more sustainable future!”
